I was thinking about my diploma project when I stumbled upon a situation about a chap, who is in constant conflict with his imaginary friend. The seed of an idea began to take shape and slowly moulded itself into a melancholy story, which deals with bipolar symptoms and social scenarios. After discussions with my friends and my guide, I figured out the story’s structure.
¬Epiphyte is the story of Rana, a 26-year-old unemployed guy who is in constant conflict with his inner voice, which also happens to be his imaginary friend, Vicky. The story deals with a father-son relationship and Rana’s constant struggle with his solitude and self-inflicting tendencies. It also reveals, at the end, the mystery behind the voice and its true significance in his life. The film has elements of self-conflict and discusses how one’s conscience can play a significant role in one’s life.
As someone who has diverse tastes, I have always been influenced by cultural differences, human behaviour, street art and music. This story had to be serious, and realistic. I decided to make my film as a stop-motion animation that included 2D sequences. I wanted to use silicone puppets and my drawing skills on Adobe Photoshop and combine them together with good sound design. The project was done in collaboration with Dirty Hands Design Studio, who provided the silicone puppets for the film.
Although I faced several difficulties and some technical problems, this process has helped me clear many of my doubts. I realized that collaboration and focus are really required for the execution of an idea in a project of this scale. |
