The initial brief for this project was to study the emerging human computer interaction (HCI) technologies such as flexible displays, interaction paradigms such as gestures, haptic, etc. and explore the possibilities of them helping in improving the user experience of products designed by Honeywell. I had to illustrate scenarios of the problems that would be identified in the study and simulate proposed solutions.

The project was divided into three parts. The first delved into the study of technologies involved in flexible displays and that of the existing products, concepts and HCI methods available in flexible displays. The second phase involved finding out applications of properties of flexible displays and developing HCI possibilities using that technology. The third dealt with designing the device, Morph, a collapsible (portable), touch-sensitive, shapeable, handheld monitor which could be wirelessly connected to other devices and objects such as phone, car, home, etc. Its function would be derived from the device it was connected to and hence the concept was not product-driven but user-driven.

Features such as a large touchscreen, large onscreen keyboard and flexible display enabled gestures, collapsibility, the ability to give a user-defined shape, etc. and thereby improved the workflow and user experience. The device was named Morph, not only because it could physically change its shape but also its function could be changed according to the scenario it was in.

The database of researched information and new interaction methods accumulated during this project will be valid for a number of projects at Honeywell. This project also allowed me to study and work with new technologies and human interactions with the same.
