MY diploma project was to develop a new collection of prints for cushions and other products for Studio B’s home brand CNG.
I started with getting a better understanding of the brand and its target market through market research. That, in turn, helped me with the process of design development. The first collection was based on the theme, Vintage India. I looked at vintage packaging, advertisings, calendar art, graphic layouts, etc. and executed a few concepts and designs based on the same. I also looked at the old mailing system (postcards, envelops, stamps, seals, etc.) and merged them with the elements of Vintage India’s ‘popular culture’.
From my study on the current market trends and the forecast for the coming season, I noticed that there was a renewed interest in art and cultural practices all over the world. I turned to Bhitti Chitra and Gond paintings, both tribal art forms of Madhya Pradesh, for inspiration for my next two collections. I tried to study these paintings, the purpose for their creation, detailing, aesthetics and the beautiful stories they tell. The main focus of these collections was to interpret the folk and tribal art in a contemporary manner while working within the company’s constraints.
Through this project I have learned that design is not just about doing what excites me, but to also cater to the needs of client/sponsor, which may add a new set of constraints to the design process. |
