Keywords Refinery complex Bus shelter Pylon Bold |
The project I worked on is of great significance to the future infrastructure of the city of Jamnagar in Gujarat. The Essar Refinery Complex is prepped to become the world’s largest refining complex in terms of area capacity, along with Reliance Petroleum, and will bring global recognition to this small town. My project’s final deliverables were for the Essar refinery, the Essar Township and the state highway approaching these complexes. After working on concepts for facade elevations, landscape design, guard cabin and the signage, I started work on two main components: the pylon and bus shelter.
The signage pylon is austere. It speaks about the brand, Essar, and symbolizes the future of ‘branding through architecture’, a Western concept in the Indian branding scenario. The concept was finalised for its simple yet sophisticated form. The pylon’s side-lit profile is appropriately visible from a large distance. The upwards pointing tip is symbolic of positive action, like the brand’s philosophy. In order to maintain safety and security standards at the refinery complex, it was important to design an information panel for employees, labour and staff of the Essar Refinery, and also visitors.
The form of the bus shelter is about clear and bold lines, with materials such as stainless steel, aluminium and stone that promise to be the future of Indian infrastructure. The design process involved the study of the relevance of various elements, including local climatic considerations in the choice of materials, design of roof-width and seating patterns.
My background in architecture enabled me to comprehend those aspects of this project and put in the expertise of product detailing to even the smallest product component. I look forward to my designs being implemented for public use. |
