Solid Wood Living Room Furniture

My project is the outcome of user-research and symbolizes today’s changing lifestyle patterns. The ever-increasing demand for more seating during social events such as get-togethers and parties requires the flexibility to change the layout whenever it is required. I explored the idea of creating a system for allowing more seating within the existing arrangement. My concept allows the user to expand the seating with the existing furniture, eliminating the need to introduce more furniture into an already shrinking living space.

The two-seater unit I developed is a normal-height sofa that can be transformed into a low-height seating. The seating has multiple uses and allows users to change the layout according to their needs. Further intervention led me to add a side-table to the existing seating module. I also prototyped a centre-table and a side-bench that are integral to this range. The other objective of this project was to design a transport-friendly flat-packing sofa module.

This diploma project provided me the opportunity to work in the industry, learn and developing new ideas. I developed a greater understanding of materials, finishes and processes. It was a great experience to work with solid wood alongside master craftsmen from this field. As a designer in an industrial organization, I was able to develop skills such as those for efficiently organizing and managing resources. From my interaction with engineers, I learnt many technical aspects of furniture design and assessment of furniture.
