The aim of the project was to develop navigation application(s) for searching and managing new/unknown locations in India, which would be an extension of the Value Radio Navigation System presently developed by Bosch. Since the primary target segment is tech-savvy, Bangalore was selected for conducting a user research study as it constitutes a growing floating population that is eager to explore the unknown city and also a growing vehicular population.

The concepts were developed and refined using extensive user research, market analysis, literature review, user testing, along with the study of Indian infrastructure and unique traffic conditions. They were developed with the primary focus on visual and tactile interactions between the users and the system. In addition, I studied the auditory interactions in order to evaluate the overall interaction experience. New methods were evolved for a personalized search for new locations. For instance, the use of online advertisements, online contacts, local government offices, etc. offered users multiple options to search for new locations.

While presently the scope of the project is limited to the personalized search of new locations in India, its findings can be extrapolated for the development of a complete navigation system exclusive to the Indian market. The evaluation of these concepts with real-time users using paper and software-based prototypes showed that all of them appreciated and accepted the need for such a system and that the integration of such concepts with an economical navigation system would be readily accepted by all sections of Indian users.

With this project’s positive results, the next step would be to develop a complete interactive prototype and have the concepts validated in real driving conditions.
