Storytelling
Every space has a story to tell. But in most cases, this story is in abstraction. Scenography can be used as a tool to reduce that abstraction and make it easier to convey the message of the story. In this project, I got an opportunity to work on the experiential aspect of the space and turn the space into an effective storyteller.

My clients wanted to build a corporate museum which would portray their development from their origins to their current status. We proposed a completely experiential space which would incorporate various media to communicate the message.

The narrative was based on Chandni Chowk, one of the most famous streets in India and one that functions as a complete ecosystem. To understand the ‘temperament’ of Shahjahnabad (old Delhi) from the 1900s to 1970s, I had to trace its evolution with respect to its physical and social changes. I developed a narrative that bridged the gap between fact, drama and fantasy. Finally, a space was created using all kinds of sensory media that would awe the audience.

I benefited greatly from the understanding I gained of the methods of disseminating information and how a story could be used to provide both quantitative and qualitative data. Creating narratives in a physical space to engage the viewer using various subtle techniques was an exciting process. To follow a methodology which offers a balance between process and intuition, is the most important thing I learnt from this project.
