My diploma project comprises a collection of home furnishing fabrics for Eastern Silks. The collection includes fabrics for curtains, upholstery, sheers and cushions that were to be presented at international fairs in Belgium and Germany. The aim was to target their largest markets — Europe and USA — while retaining their identity and providing opportunities that would enhance their design perspectives.
The project consisted of three different collections based on as many themes. The first was based on natural and botanical elements. The second evolved from the intricacies and geometric forms of the jaali. The third was arrived at after an analysis which inferred man’s increasing fear of natural calamities and presented the need to remind people about the beauty of nature; the beauty of water droplets and the life that thrives around it. I used natural shades of green and brown because they not only soothe the mind but also give a sense of security.
By working in a highly professional and competent environment, I learnt the importance of time management, personal discipline and management techniques. From experienced designers and technical persons I learnt about the various facets of designing. Watching my ideas and concepts being woven into magnificent fabric lengths gave me immense joy and a deep sense of satisfaction.
