Systems approach
The subject of research for this project was the health of the constabulary and junior officers in Bhubaneswar Urban Police District.
A systems approach was followed in this project. It started with understanding the systemic nature of health issues faced by the personnel and their families. It was crucial to address them through possible design interventions. Thereafter, the objective was to design various possible product service-strategy solutions and sub-systems to support and sustain the interventions.
Most of the design interventions were simple, user-centric solutions with a number of services mapped onto them. They were based on practices common in the police (especially among personnel from the lower ranks). Health-oriented functions were mapped to address the health concerns of police personnel at various levels. Since mobile phones and SMS services were popular among the personnel, SMS prompts and tips were customised to the prevailing conditions.
A host of other functions, which were not directly related to healthcare, were also mapped onto these interventions to aid police personnel with their work, thereby making them more efficient and effective. These functions were designed to save time, decrease latency, improve transparency and reduce fatigue. Further, these functions were mapped onto a meta-system to make the solutions effective and the system robust. To support and sustain the design interventions, a host of support structures were also recommended.
Through this project I gained the experience of working with government agencies and witnessing a different reality. This project has opened up a new direction for design thinking and intervention. The approach used in this project can be taken further to aid other branches of the government.
