My project deals with the combined usage of graphic design and spatial elements as narrative tools. The context was Oye Amritsar, a five-star restaurant who opened their third outlet at Bannerghatta Road in Bengaluru (Bangalore). Oye Amritsar is undergoing standardization to become a global brand and want to use Indian art to help them do just that.
My role as a space designer was to extend the design philosophy of Indian streets and dhabas to a restaurant space. The project dealt with concept simulation and execution of an engaging and evocative experience for the themed restaurant. The objective was to create a brand experience through various elements in the form of space graphics narrative, props and installations.
The process, which involved the act of imbibing the philosophy and visual idiom of the brand and translating it into a vibrant spatial experience, does justice to its wide range of traditional Indian (Punjabi) cuisine and India’s streets. It does so by offering user/customers an engrossing illustration/visual while they are in theatrical set-up.
Through this project, I learnt about designing for stability and adaptability to any space, since the dhaba-themed restaurant aims to multiply all over the world. I immensely gained through the experience of working in a professional environment, applying a proper design process and delivering executable designs for production. I value interdisciplinary collaboration because it results in fresh ideas.
