One winter, when I was visiting my family, I stumbled upon the seed of this story. We had gone out for lunch and had ordered fish. Everyone was enjoying their meal when my niece, who was eating fish for the first time screamed, “The fish is biting me, the fish is biting me!” The fishbone had pricked her finger while she was eating. I was amused by her innocent remark and I wanted to share this moment through my film.
The story is about an eight-year-old girl, Harini and her friend Subbu, a goldfish. Their friendship goes through a rough patch when Harini starts thinking that she will do well in her studies if she eats fish. Harini is in a pickle and needs to take a decision.
Every product requires a certain amount of authenticity and an audience to market it. I visited my hometown, Shivamogga in Karnataka, and tried to capture the essence and life of the place. The animatic and script went through several iterations till I was satisfied enough to begin production. I started with the backgrounds; the film has three different settings: home, school and auto rickshaw. The film consists of hand-drawn animation which has been composited and coloured digitally. Since the target audience comprises children in the age group of 6-12 twelve years, the narrative has been kept simple.
The process of creating the different settings with different moods was fun. I enjoyed composing a story with classical 2D animation. Exploring the colour palette, layouts, characters and so on made the film more believable and closer to reality.
