Keywords Cushions Table Linen Digital Prints Celebration |
The brief was to design printed fabrics, embroidered surfaces and woven fabrics for the Spring-Summer 2012 collection. It involved techniques such as printing, weaving, embroidery and digital printing. The scope of the project included working in a professional environment, applying a proper design process and deriving designs which would later be produced.
From range planning to final production, I was involved in all the stages of product development. I designed three collections, each comprising 10-12 cushion covers and another collection of cushion covers and table-and kitchen-linen products. The collections are titled Soul Global Fusion, Protection and Mimicry.
The Soul Global Fusion collection presents a vibrant celebration of different cultures and traditions around the world and presents a diverse palette rooted in one’s own culture. For this collection, textiles from all over the world were studied in terms of their significance, motifs, colour and pattern. Initially, the sketches drew inspiration from the textile pieces. Stripes, zigzags, floral and grid forms were further explored with references. The second collection was based on a study of Italian fashion designer Roberto Capucci’s work. A collection of decorative cushions was developed using techniques such as pleating, layering and origami. For the third collection, the cushions were based on digital prints.
This experience helped me understand the importance of design process and punctuality. It gave me an opportunity and insight into the working of export houses and to apply my knowledge of textile design. Work, excitement, nervousness, learning and a feeling of accomplishment made this experience fun. |
