The objective of my diploma project was to explore and analyze the current market for home appliances in India. The intent was to map and validate the data through research and inferences, for developing insights and concepts for a contemporary Indian audience. I had to identify trends for delivering design inputs in terms of colour and pattern for the upcoming Samsung electronic products for 2012 and 2013.

The project included extensive market research, user study, home visits and a thorough analysis of the current scenario in India across various categories of lifestyle. I followed this by mapping the data visually and extracting meaningful inferences to help understand the preference of users and their visual interpretation.

Based on these inferences, themes were conceptualized, which would give a design direction to the physical appearance of home appliances. It was crucial to identify the deliverables first and then analyze the data accordingly. In several stages, users were involved to validate the designs that were produced and bring clarity and understanding to them so that it could go into mass production. The deliverables included validated themes and a pattern book of several design options of patterns and colours for washing machines and refrigerators.

The experience of doing this project has been productive and rich. The field of trend forecasting is vast and varied and I learnt that one has to be very focused and critical of the method that is followed.
