I worked with the Dutch printer company, Océ, on the development of a Large Format Printer (LFP) for the Canon-Océ Group in India. The objectives of this project were to study the Indian market, work out what the target markets and their future scenarios would be and present a concept design for a printer.
A team comprising students from TU Delft, Netherlands and NID, Ahmedabad carried out field research in nine cities across India. Subsequently, individual studies were conducted. Through my study, I suggested the primary and secondary markets for this product, product environment, product requirements and the approach for the creative strategy. I came up with a design for a Large Format LED Printer, which incorporated cloud computing and a suitable interface, based on the future scenarios for the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) market in India.
Through this project, I have learnt how to take a holistic approach to designing a real product. A product never exists on its own. It has to be designed, while keeping in mind many other factors and constraints. The nuances of the Indian market are tricky and have to be taken into consideration while defining a product. The fast-paced growth of the Indian economy and infrastructure entail the need for careful predictions of future scenarios while designing visuals, electronics and the expected functionality of a product. Working with an international team, I enriched my research and learning processes. I was also surprised to find the similarities and enormous differences between the product environments in India and the Netherlands. |
