My project is about using user-centered design principles to design cell phone interactions for rural India a more comfortable, convenient and shared experience. Earlier limited to metropolitan and large cities, mobile telephony is rapidly becoming a part of rural settings as well owing to favourable policies of the government and search for newer markets by the mobile service providers. Although cellular services are becoming an integral part of rural India, yet very little has been done by handset manufacturers in term of localization.
This design project aimed to investigate how mobile phone interfaces can be better designed to meet the needs and requirements of a rural user, what content can empower a typical low-tier segment user and how the information or content can be structured to provide easy usage and navigation.
The main focus was to understand the challenges of working within a certain set of constraints and improving interactions, workflows and interface designs from the perspective of LG VLT GSM phones. Multiple iterations and refinements took place in data generation and analysis.
My objective was to design a user-centric interface for rural mobile users of India keeping in mind the rural expectations and preferences and identifying user aspiration and needs in VLT GSM. The final concept that emerged was that of a family phone which looked at interfaces from the point of view of a shared device rather than a personal device because in rural India mobile phone is considered as a family asset.
This project helped me learn the process of design from the stage of concept generation to final product. I also learnt to design target user specific information through this project. |
