The objective of my diploma project was to do a trend and design research-the findings of which could be applied in developing the surface and textures of automotive interiors. The project addressed the aspect of contemporary material culture and also tried to define what contributes to the aesthetic appeal of the materials. It dealt with the visual and surface appeal of the material. Plastic was studied for its aesthetic value and subsequently for designing textures that can be applied in automotive interiors. Plastic has always drawn inspiration from other natural and man-made materials. Emphasis on the perception of plastic vis-a-vis other materials that we interact with and our response and reaction to them was also studied.
The trend research included study of prominent trends related to lifestyle and design. Both these trends laid emphasis on material and surface appeal to seek directions for designing textures for automotive interiors. A qualitative research which gives an idea of the customers’ lifestyle and attitude was important for this project. The research involved visual prompts, question, material and texture samples to understand the emotive reference and preference of the target customers.
Through analysis of the findings from the trend and qualitative research it was possible to estimate the inclinations and aspirations of the target customer and hence develop trend directions for an upcoming vehicle of Mahindra & Mahindra scheduled to be launched in 2013. The trends developed were unique in their design sensibility and may be adopted while designing the vehicle’s interior and also while developing textures. |
