The brief of my diploma project was to design a set of contemporary wooden furniture for the Indian bedrooms. I thus, developed a set of wooden furniture to suit the domestic requirements giving importance to the form, texture and colour of the furniture. The furniture will be retailed in India and exported to the overseas market by ‘Ninety One Degree’ and its partner stores.
I started my research by collecting information on contemporary bedrooms, their interior layouts and the existing bedroom furniture. I also studied the collections of ‘Ninety One Degree’ to understand the design language of the company. I carried out a study on the trends in bedroom furniture to analyze the changes in the style of furniture in the present Indian and global context. This study helped me understand the behaviour of the market and the needs of the customers.
I attended the trade fairs in Delhi and Jaipur, which helped me understand the customer needs and interests at a larger scale. Ergonomics of using beds were also studied along with other factors like time, cost and the manufacturing facilities available in the company.
The initial explorations and development of concepts begun keeping in mind the design parameters developed through initial studies. I came up with several concepts for the new bedroom set. From the concepts the final design of the bedroom set which best suited the Indian context was developed. The first prototyping was done through which I added some more products for the international market.
This project provided me good understanding of the company’s setup, product marketing, time management, production and quality control as well as communication skills. My diploma project was thus a learning experience both professionally and personally. |
