Dhoop Crafts began in 2003 as an imaginatively styled retail outlet for good quality handcrafts from different parts of the country. Its range consists of home accessories and apparel in contemporary designs. Right from the beginning, Dhoop Crafts has initiated and encouraged the use of newly discovered natural materials in their products—banana fibre, water hyacinth, Sabai grass, palm leaves, golden grass, and coconut shells to name a few. My diploma project focused on merging the natural with the kitsch style and designing a range of lighting solutions and other home accessories. This approach of combining two distinct elements was a well thought about direction with an anticipated destination point. The journey began with exploring unfamiliar territories. Kitsch was a style of work seen but not studied. The natural path was a completely alien domain, and lighting was attempted but not explored. Understanding and interpreting these diverse directions was an enriching and progressive development. It drew a clear-cut picture of the potential and limitations of each area and the scope of harmoniously blending them. This led me towards instinctive idea generation and an assortment of explorations. Bringing these diverse entities under one roof was a challenge, but streamlined conceptualisation, in-depth analysis and fine-tuning helped me achieve the envisioned outcome. |
