As part of my diploma project I developed a set of cord range home furniture for living space. My target audiences were globe-trotting individuals of 35–50 years, conscious of environmental issues and eco-friendly materials. My project brief was to create a design language in line with the ‘Indian’ style and to conceptualize a range of home furniture in accordance with the company’s manufacturing setup.
To derive keywords and attributes that could initiate the thought process, a study was carried out in the ‘Konkan’ region. Efforts were made to know the people, their lifestyle and culture, heritage and materials they use. Surveys were carried out to determine user needs and market trends to pinpoint areas of design intervention and to identify choice of material and cost. I visited Hasta Shilpa Heritage Village at Manipal for design inspiration and to understand the different traditional construction techniques.
Research was carried out to study existing home furniture and space planning principles, based on which design guideline was developed for explorations with form, function and materials. Several concepts were developed and some were detailed out keeping in mind the availability of the production process. Prior to starting a full scale prototype, 1:3 and 1:5 scale models were made to check the structural stability, detailing and all other aspects of the design. Two of the six concepts - Cord Bench and the Center Table - were chosen for prototyping.
During the diploma project, I learnt the working system of a manufacturing setup functioning in tandem with design team. It also provided me an opportunity to augment my education in woodwork- my core interest as a furniture designer. |
