In addition to the existing furniture collection of my sponsor, in my diploma project I designed for them a set of dinning furniture range meant for the urban upper middle class. I kept in mind the constraints of the design house production facilities and their design philosophy. My project brief was to design a range of home furniture mostly to be used in dining and living areas keeping in mind the identity of Quetzel and its existing Indiq range.
I conducted a user study to understand their lifestyle, need and comfort as well as different activities associated with specific home interiors and furniture. In order to understand the present market scenario, demand and needs of the customers, I visited several furniture design stores which proved very helpful. Existing dining furniture range was analysed in detail including its components and parts and their assembly and sub-assembly. I developed specific style as the identity of the range of furniture. Several initial concepts were created and based on the discussions, few were finalised for further explorations.
In the next step, emphasis was given on joinery and detailing which were actually the soul of the furniture. This detailing stage also became very important to ensure smooth production. After finalizing the concepts, drawings were developed for initial models and mock ups and finally the prototypes were made. This stage proved very helpful to understand the structure and how they could be improved further. After analyzing the initial prototypes some changes were suggested to improve the products. Engineering requirements were also mapped to create production-ready blueprints.
My diploma project was a great opportunity to work as part of the production process along with design. This opportunity helped me look towards the whole production process with a new perspective. Besides, constrains actually made me learn so many valuable things about the machines and the way they work. |
