My diploma project involved designing a range of future office workspace system for private organizations. The system had to be interactive, flexible, modular easy to maintain, manufacture and transport besides being able to be customized in terms of space and financial constraints. I was supposed to design work space module for future offices.
The project started with collecting primary information on existing categories of office spaces and changing scenarios in working pattern. It included gathering information on usability aspects and current design trends in office systems besides ergonomic data on various design applications. An in-depth study was done on office workstations to understand the working habits in today’s context. Various supplementary components of furniture, electronic machineries and stationeries that go along with the work stations in the present system were studied to streamline the designing parameters. User-centric interviews were conducted as a part of the research at different corporate offices dealing with Marketing, IT and Design. Collected data was later analyzed and synthesized to create a database in form of inferences for application in the design procedure.
After identifying design directions, various explorations were carried out to conceptualize. Geometric 2-D surfaces were studied for maximizing the utility of the space. A suitable surface was selected to develop several alternatives which can be provided in office spaces. One of the alternatives was then detailed out further for full scale mock up prototype for testing and alterations were made considering the cognitive design issues. The second prototype was designed removing previous shortcomings.
The project has been a motivating yet arduous journey from defining and achieving goals in the industrial context. It helped me learn the importance of making correct decisions, judgment and maturity while dealing with real life projects. |
