Rhizome design studio was commissioned a project by the Eklavya Foundation. Eklavya Foundation is working as a project partner with Gujarat State Forest Department and Tapini Bamboo Devlopment Centre (TBDC) under the National Bamboo Mission (NBM). The purpose of my diploma project was to develop a sustainable range of bamboo products combining waste materials for the global market according to the Rhizome frame work. My diploma project required an understanding of the company framework, material availability, present product range, consumers, bamboo crafts, craftspersons and their skill level and techniques, inclusion of field studies, making of product library, material exploration, product conceptualisation, product development, and training the Kotwalia artisans. Research led me to interesting facts about waste materials, our behaviour towards recycling and reusing, history of recycling and reusing, where Indian consumers stand as sustainable consumers, and different products in waste materials. After identifying the materials based on the availability and quantity, I analysed how to add waste materials to bamboo products. Subsequently, I found an opportunity for the artisans, designers and for the consumers. As a designer, my role in this was to share knowledge about bamboo, new techniques, new products, markets, and also preserve the traditional techniques and products. Working with bamboo is an art. Explorations with bamboo taught me few techniques that could provide a designer challenging opportunities to work with. |
