My project was to design a set of living room bamboo furniture for the urban Indians which could also change the perception about bamboo furniture at the same time. Durability and aesthetics had to be given utmost priority since a home furniture piece is not only a functional object but also an expression of the personality and an extension of the lifestyle of the user. The brief of the project was thus to design furniture meeting the aspirations and requirements of the contemporary young consumers and realize them using bamboo as the material.
The project started with understanding of the material, its properties, strengths and weaknesses and the various processes feasible in the workshop. User research and survey provided insights into the preferences people have for home furniture and also how the user interacts with the furniture. An important aspect was to understand the people’s percep¬tion towards bamboo which wasn’t quite favourable. So there was a need to design the bamboo furniture in such a way as to appeal to the consumers.
While conceptualizing the design, form was given priority to attract young consumers. Possibilities of mixing bamboo with other materials were also explored to enhance its value. Concepts were developed to make the designs production friendly, easy and economical to transport. Emphasis was given on folding, nesting, modularity and compactness so as to standardize the manufacturing process to facilitate large scale production. Combination of bamboo with other materials like fabrics, leather and cotton thread weaving, etc. were explored keeping in mind aesthetics, functionality, comfort, budget and lifestyle aspects of the furniture. This was the first time I worked with bamboo and but I explored its feasibility as one of the most sustainable materials available today. |
