In my diploma project, I designed and developed a bent laminate lounge chair which was elegant in style and treatment yet contemporary and in line with the changing trends. It was also designed in synchronization with the existing product range of the sponsor. The target users were the upper middle and higher sections of the society. My project brief was to design residential furniture using bent wood technique with the incorporation of metal and leather. Once the brief was finalized, I thoroughly studied the set up and infrastructure, the production facilities and the type of projects being handled by the sponsor. Then I carried out research on the techniques of bending wood and the current trends of residential furniture in the market. I visited a few furniture stores in Delhi studying the kind of furniture available and the way a user interacts with them.
Out of several concepts, one was selected by the sponsor after critically judging it on a set of parameters. After finalizing the design, hardware and joinery details, I fabricated 1:3 scaled down model. After some more detailing, I started full scale production. This project trained me in taking independent decisions and implementing them with confidence. Study of Delhi market during the project made me aware of the present trends and the preference of people. I also learnt to work within the given framework and use the available materials and processes to create a product that is unique and acceptable to the users. |
