Navajeevan Balabhavan is an organisation which works for the rescue and rehabilitation of the street children. The members of the organisation go out looking for street children, and try to bring them to the shelter. The interaction between the childcare worker and the unaccompanied child is crucial for the success of the rehabilitation that follows. For children living on the street, leaving their hazardous but familiar comfort zone is difficult. For kids who are lost, it is difficult to trust a strange adult and to be taken to a new place. These issues, combined with the emotional stress faced by the childcare worker makes the interaction between these two individuals difficult.
My diploma project was largely concerned with those working with unaccompanied children. This area was conventionally seen to be the area of social work. This project proposed that design research and design itself can be utilized, in collaboration with other domain expertise such as child psychology to bring in different perspectives to this domain, not only for supportive tangibles such as databases or spaces, but in designing the human interaction between the child and the childcare worker.
In this project, I have tried to design the interaction between the childcare worker and the child in different situations both on the street and until their journey to the shelter. The core idea is to create a dialogue between the two individuals, by utilising the knowledge that one has of the other. This idea manifested in the form of an experience created by spaces and events. Several activities, events and spaces have been suggested in this project which will aid a more comfortable and successful dialogue between the child on the street and those hoping to rescue him/her. |
