My diploma project Moonj–The Natural Fibre: Design Intervention in Moonj and Kasi Grass in Sitapur District, Uttar Pradesh was sponsored by Industree Crafts Foundation (ICF), Bengaluru. The project brief focused on designing products made of natural fibres and giving them a new look by mixing different materials, thereby sustaining the livelihood of the identified crafts cluster. It included a study of different natural materials and their characteristics and techniques involved in making products from them. Information about the traditional products and existing natural fibre-based products in the market and their potential competitors was collected and analyzed for exploring newer possibilities. Books, documents at ICF, buyers’ responses, internet sources, interviews, and inputs from senior employees at ICF facilitated this exploration. Products had to be designed for the Big Bazaar consumers. With the help of collected information an appropriate consumer profile was created.
Sketches for the final product ranges based on three stories were developed, and later the artisans were asked to convert the sketches into final products. The final products of the three ranges were developed in Sitapur. The first collection was inspired by Karwa Chauth. The second collection was inspired by the local fair called ‘Amavas ka Mela’. The third collection was inspired by the architecture of houses in Sitapur. This project has undoubtedly been a rewarding one. It gave a crucial insight into the treasure of indigenous products that are created in India and how these products are strongly embedded into Indian cultural practices. |
