Conversation is the most basic and yet the most powerful way of initiating collaboration. Research shows information workers spend about 60% of their time communicating at their workplace. Microsoft intended to look into this area and increase the value of communication by helping information workers to focus on the relevant conversations and pieces of information.
My diploma project on web communication dealt with the understanding of ‘meetings’ in the enterprise domain and identifying design interventions in the web based platforms for unified collaborative communications. Unified communications (UC) is the integration of real-time with non real-time communication services such as E-mail, calendaring, instant messaging (chat), telephony (including VOIP), video conferencing, call control among others.
My project was primarily research based and exploratory in nature. My task was to identify the communication related needs of the users and conceptualize the product features. This was done together with the product planning team for next release plan of unified communication. Design process involved development of scenarios around meeting space. Thereafter shortlisted scenarios were taken forward for conceptualization. The end product was user interface / interaction design that intended to allow users to communicate, collaborate seamlessly and effectively at meetings. This project also enabled new business opportunities for future scope of unified communication. |
