'Designer as Author': The Experience of Verbalizing Design

I wrote and designed a book titled ‘Making Sense of Design’ as part of my diploma
project. The book was an attempt to simplify the concept of design and make it more
accessible to the layperson. The scope of the project involved creating the structure
for the book's content, analyzing data, accessing relevant resources, synthesizing
information, articulating concepts, authoring chapters, visualizing content, designing
the book and documenting the project. In the book, I attempted to provide an overview
of the basic concepts of design. The book covers topics such as Myths (to demystify
myths that fog the design practice), Design Culture (to emphasize designs that already
exist in our culture), Design Process (to establish design as a credible profession) and
Design Ethics (to define the basic codes of practicing design). The book acts as a primer
to design, in general, within an Indian context. The primary readers of Making Sense
of Design are aspiring applicants for design schools and currently enrolled students of
design schools. The secondary readers are the parents who can influence their children
to see potential in design as a study and career option.
Having written and designed the book, I have prepared myself to build a process,
a philosophy and an approach toward generating and shaping content that is both
authentic and reader-centric. Although, this project was a testing ground for me, I subtly
also established an entrepreneurial mindset around it. |
