I designed in this project a set of living room and bedroom furniture. It included a television unit with storage facility, double bed with side units and dresser with mobile storage unit cum seat using coir composite materials in combination with stainless steel and wood. The Indian furniture industry is gradually transforming into a more organized and competitive sector due to the entry of global brands and emergence of large retail players and franchises. Manufacturers are expected to provide more flexibility in furniture and offer customization to meet different requirements. The objectives of this project were to do value addition to coir composite panel, explore the possibility of the material and popularize its various applications among architects, interior designers and customers and instil confidence in them about the material.
The project started with information collection on coir fibre, its characteristics, different applications besides advantages and limitations of coir composite panels. Home furniture available in the market were studied in detail to know the existing trends, materials, available sizes and cost. User survey was conducted through personal interaction and questionnaire to understand their physical and psychological requirements, lifestyle and needs. An ergonomic study was also made on different postures and requirement of specific body dimensions. Rooms and bedrooms in some apartments were also studied to understand the architecture and interior dimensions.
Several concepts were developed keeping in mind modularity and flexibility in arrangement. Material combinations and different structure possibilities were also explored. Few concepts were selected and further explored considering ease of knock down, production and transportation. Before prototyping, scaled down models were developed to finalize detailing and materials combinations. My diploma project provided me the confidence as designer before entering the professional career of design.
