My diploma project was to conceptualize and develop the environment graphics language for the entire ‘Jonakee Complex’; a film museum conceptualized by the Assam State Film (Finance and Development) Corporation. My objective was to visualize and design the language of environment graphics for Jonakee film museum featuring Assamese cinema and develop a systematic visual language which was flexible, allowed experience and experimentation and was easier to produce and reproduce. The main purpose was to bring back the glory of the Assamese cinema, to make the faces known and share the stories behind its evolution and thereby create awareness among the people. My project began with ground research on museums, exhibitions, displays and spaces followed by analyzing the requirements for the gallery in terms of the exhibits, display and presentation besides creating content. In the process, I also tried to understand the different aspects of Assamese cinema and to find out its icons and symbols which connect cinema to the people. The target group was the people at large who wanted to follow and learn about the Assamese cinema.
Doing a diploma project on a museum extended my horizon of understanding in the field of graphic design. A museum design project is a complex exercise which involves a lot of people. The biggest learning I had from this project was that I understood the importance of planning a project and define the role of each individual in it. |
