I did my diploma project with an Italy based company Addesso Pelle Pvt. Ltd. The company is driven by the inspiration to create ultimate standards in luxury by delivering the best in design, quality and finish. After having explored the Italian market, the idea was to explore possibilities in other markets and then the high end fashion market of Japan. The objective of the project was to design a range of handbags for the two growing market segments in Japan namely the working women- “Working Queens” and old ladies – “Grey Yen.”
I took some time to understand the needs of the market and identify the possible areas of design intervention. An in-depth research on the culture and lifestyle of Japan was an important part of the project. I looked into the possibilities of linking my inputs with consumer psychographics to define the customer’s likes, dislikes and buying behaviour.
With this project, I gained a 360 degree exposure as I had to deal with the various departments of the company, its different technical experts- both Italian and Indian, various clients and the workers. I also learnt about leather as a material, handbags and their design aspects. I came to know international trends, manufacturing process and detailing. It helped me grow as an individual designer creating designs which were an amalgamation of the best of technology and aesthetics. The project taught me to deliver good results without losing the meaning of my initial concepts. Through this project I have realized the role of design as a business tool. It has been a wholesome experience which has changed me as a designer as well as a person. |
