My diploma project was aimed at creating educational booklets which were to be used as teaching aid as part of the curriculum of an organization called Doosra Dashak. It is an NGO that works in the field of providing holistic education to boys and girls in the age group of 11 to 20 years at the grass root level in different parts of Rajasthan. The objective of the project was to create a standardized production and presentation format for a chosen subject out of the five taught. The same format was supposed to be followed for all the other future booklets that could be prepared for use by Doosra Dashak. I choose to work on a subject called Samaj Ki Parakh which is a contextual and relevant combination of social studies, rights, civic issues, Panchayati Raj, gender awareness, local issues etc. The project started with analyzing the existing Teaching and Learning material followed by visual field study of the rural environment and verification of visual language the sponsor preferred. I redesigned three sample booklets and two additional covers for them. Care was taken to keep the cost of production minimal as their budget for production was limited. Target group for this project was primarily adolescents and the sahbhagis (associates) affiliated with Doosra Dashak.
The interaction with adolescents while doing this project was an insightful experience. While working on this project I also realized there is noticeable disconnect between the need of audience and visual communicators in the development sector. |
