Chokhelao is an 18th century garden in the Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur. Due to over a century of neglect, it had ceased to bear any resemblance to a Rajput garden in the Chaharbagh idiom of design. My project sought to recreate this garden through an analysis and understanding of contemporary Marwar paintings.
In researching and interpreting these paintings, I identified certain principles and themes and translated them into a scheme to result in a garden which evokes the cultural tradition of eighteenth century Marwar replete with scents, sounds and textures.
My objective was to participate in the restoration of a heritage site and create a visual representation aid to the garden and plant signs. The target audience was visitors, tourists, botanical enthusiasts and employees. I created a visual language that will be carried forward into the garden as leaflet and plant signs through study of prevalent visual art styles. My design process included typography, ergonomics, color, technology, product and light.
Being interdisciplinary in nature, my design process involved many other design disciplines like architecture and exhibition design. I allowed to work with multifaceted designers, curators and historians and to engage in consensus-building for all my ideas incorporating their diverse views. I now understand practicalities of manufacturing processes and costs. I also worked on three other separate projects – the Kashmir Loom Collateral; Development Authority of India Trophy and the ASI Children’s Museum Concept.
My project has contributed greatly to my becoming a responsible designer by sensitizing me to environmentally friendly design approaches. |
