I worked on my project at Michael Sodeau Partnership (MSP), London in January 2009. Working in a collaborative venture as a group of three designers, I designed a furniture range for Martinhal Resort in Sagres, Portugal comprising 50 pieces of furniture.
Until I arrived at the resort, I familiarized myself with Sagres’ site conditions, local vegetation, climate, local construction materials and crafts .
The brand identity of MSP espouses core values of simplicity, functionality and eco-friendliness I also took on the responsibility of creating a data management format and updating it periodically. This assignment ensured that I was always up to date with all the project details.
Martinhal is a resort that welcomes clients on a long term lease which means that although a resort it is also a home. The furniture I designed, therefore, reflects a ‘home away from home’, incorporating all the luxury of a hotel, yet maintaining the coziness of a home. This was my first exposure to eco-sensitive designs through choosing local materials and techniques, using recycled materials and promoting local industry. I also designed a range of rugs and towels.
MSP provided a sense of freedom to our thoughts. We did not have to justify the forms we chose, but we did have to have a sense of responsibility in our design decisions.
Working with European clients and manufacturers was entirely different from similar Indian ones and interesting. My project was also valuable since it gave me exposure to different flavors of nationalities. I can now incorporate a variety of international dimensions into my designs. |
