My creative bent has always been inspired by the exploration of diverse art forms around me – be it the local potter or the latest designer collection from Armani. In all these art forms, the beauty of the design lies in its simplicity.
I incorporated this aesthetic philosophy into my project for Grandmother India. The goal of my project was the create a branding and in-store communication for a new fashion store in Mumbai.
Since the store carried high end designer merchandise, I drove my team to give more importance to the products than the brand itself, by pursuing minimalist yet subtle distinction.
The fact that many other stores of similar concept and nature exist across the country was a challenge given that the aim was to create a mark and stand out amongst competitors. I coined the design strategy “Re-inventing the Past as the Future”.
I designed a branding strategy for the store, coined a brand name ‘CREO’ (which means 'to create' in Latin). The brand’s basic idea was to get multiple designers under one roof and create a new style statement since these designers were helping create an image through their clothing. I conceived the brand identity, finalized a color palette and developed a visual library. The most critical part of this project was to execute the “laser cutting” technology on paper.
Ny biggest learning from this ‘real world’ experience is that ideation is the easy part of the design process. Being able to communicate it to the client is an even more important part. |
