My project, titled ‘Walk on Water’ uses a participatory design approach inspired by the Gandhian tradition of self-reliance to design, develop and pilot ICT based micro watershed data collection and management in select villages. It applies a livelihood and scientific orientation to watershed management as opposed to strict biophysical criteria.
My role was to redesign the web-based Geographic Information System (GIS) and its products by understanding the needs of rural people with minimum levels of education who are maintaining a watershed at Kanchipuram district in Tamil Nadu. The goal was to enhance local capacities for eventual micromanagement and planning. The research processes featured questions relating to the extent to which the various stakeholders influence technology design.
My methodology involved tracing the various sources of water, both potable and irrigation, traditional and modern in the village. The intent was to conceptualize a visual language-independent tool to involve community.
My final design solution involved redesigning the whole application in a user-friendly UI Design. I have also proposed a different way of interaction design on this application with a map, which users normally see as a GIS application in wire line or map format. My design solution proposes a pattern of bubbles and added visual icons design with user-friendly interaction design. This pattern will help the user to feel comfortable by editing, searching of spatial and non-spatial data.
I am immensely proud of the fact that I have been able to contribute to environmental conservation issues by introducing a new approach to interaction design with maps. |
