My project focused on designing a range of tableware for the high end customer class. The client had a range called the ‘neos’ which demanded new and exclusive designs.
Minimalism as an art movement and the striking color combinations, basic geometric shapes, light effects and clean and fine finishes associated with it all inspired me. The client’s brief which specified only black and white as the color combination to keep in line with their existing ‘neos’ range. I was also inspired by Op Art, a genre of visual art derived from the constructivist practices of the Bauhaus, that makes use of optical illusions.
The study of behavioral patterns of the consumer and consumer preferences was done by referring to various magazines, internet surveys and visits to various consumer homes. Based on the survey, various concepts were developed and my collections focused on aesthetic value, fresh looks, production compatibility, time and functionality. Given that the color palette was monochromatic, black and white, and it gave me a further impetus to inculcate exclusivity in the products with the help of form and graphics.
The final collections were made of bone china - several models of circular, oval, square, triangular cups and saucers. In addition, I designed circular tea cups, triangular tea cups and a cup and saucer set called ‘The tree cup’ which was not part of the collection, but was manufactured.
The industry experience was a very rewarding experience. The management was extremely supportive of experimentation and I had the freedom to try out new things which nurtured my creativity. |
