I have always had an interest in health care and the role that technology can play in developing an excellent health care system. My project focused on reviewing the current health care system in terms of the structure of the system, the roles of key stakeholders and the information flows within the system. The issue at hand was not expand the health care infrastructure but to make it functional, accessible, accountable and better managed.
I commenced my study with extensive research on the healthcare system of the state of Karnataka focusing on the district of Bangalore North. I studied grass root level health care or primary healthcare and the information flow into hierarchical levels in the system. Although the study looked at the structure of the system in general, the main focus was to study the testing, reporting and communication between peers in the case of Malaria. I chose Malaria because it was an epidemic and tracking, reporting and communication between peers in this system offered many opportunities for ICT interventions.
I next analyzed the information and visually represented it showing different time lines, system structures, info flow diagrams etc. I created many visuals for showing different parts of the system. The visuals acted as a medium by which a better understanding was achieved, looking at the macro-perspective. This also helped at identifying potential opportunities by which ICT can be used to improve or speed up reporting and communication in disease surveillance.
I am pleased to have used my design experience in the field of grass-roots health care. |
