Much importance is given to English as it is the most extensive language used globally . Hindi on the other had is lagging behind and one can find many lacunae in the educational system used to teach Hindi . For my project, [documented in a film titled ‘Khachar Pachar’ ] I designed Hindi language teaching aids for Kindergarten students of the CBSE Board.
The research phase of this project included the study of three elements: Hindi as a language and the Devnagri script; Child psychology and learning patterns, and finally the CBSE System and its teaching modules . I also conducted an analysis of commonly used teaching aids. Finally, I studied cases of Delhi Public School, Kendriya Vidyalaya and Delhi Public School as well as Riverside School, Ahmedabad.
My research synthesis helped me arrive at design directions. I also incorporated elements such as recognition of visuals and sounds, responses to external stimuli and environment, exposure to films and TV, and cultural and social influences. I wanted the teaching aid to be affordable to users of lower socio-economic income groups.
The end-product helps in learning pronunciation, structure and word formation . The visuals also serve as a great learning tool since they are presented in the form of a story and bring out the inquisitiveness in students. In addition, I have designed teacher training manuals.
My project has illuminated how a graphic designer can contribute to curriculum design and enrich a child’s communication skills by translating verbal code into written code. |
