My project was to develop high-end luminaries for living room spaces using the Sanjhi craft of Mathura for both domestic and international markets. Sanjhi is an ancient craft of cutting paper stencils to make Rangoli patterns on walls and floors. It traditionally comprises of themes and motifs depicting the life of Lord Krishna.
My research process included understanding the company profile, studying the Sanjhi craft, existing lighting areas, fixtures, positioning, hardware and understanding the user. I also looked into product campaigns for the Tokyo, London and Japan. I collected data about how luminaries are hung, placed, carried, and transported by the user as well as ergonomic issues. I also studied various techniques, technologies and production constraints.
I designed seven types of lamps (floor, corner table , wall mounts, hanging and ceiling ) using concepts inspired by nature such as Lilly flowers, leaves, sedimentary rocks, the Jamun tree, a reflection of a tree in water, beehive form and the Peepal tree. My newly developed range adds a new flavor to the company’s existing range. . Each lamp blends into any environment and can be used effectively as sculptural or decorative lights in living room spaces.
My project was an enriching experience translating nature-based themes into products. I have also honed my decision-making skills. A key learning is identifying and employing the design philosophy of a company and creating products that reflect their design language. My project has enriched me by introducing me to a new domain of industrial design. |
