For my project, I developed a unique forecast based fusion wear for the North Indian Zone, with Chandigarh as a base market and Kanchipuram as the source of fabric. Fusion wear is a mixture of different cultural patterns, fabrics and motifs for special occasions.
It was an exciting opportunity to combine cultural, socio-economic, geographic, psychological aspects of the Indian craft sector. I explored different product possibilities of Kanchipuram silk.
The methodology included identifying the market requirements after forecasting trends and interactions with customers, especially urban youth. Subsequently, I developed mood and color boards inspired by Celtic Mythology. A visit to Kanchipuram for a live study of the crafts and a socio-cultural exposure followed. Finally, I arrived at a design direction. My inspiration was 18th century sea expeditions of explorers in Europe to explore new markets.
The project concluded with design and development including styling, detailing and development of the final sample complete with trims, prints and embroidery.
The final collection was a party wear collection (women's wear) with Kanchipuram silk fabric for the Spring Summer 2010 season.
I acquired phenomenal exposure and experience in operational methods of craft based fashion forecasting. My project sensitized me to the nitty-gritty of craft based product diversification. It also has social relevance as it boosts the trade of artisans and provides them a better economic livelihood. I had the opportunity to interact with people from different fields and participate in shared learning. This experience has enriched me as a professional designer. |
