When I was young, I always used to frequent ports and exhibitions related to ships. This fascination and interest has inspired my project. I studied the refitting process of naval-warships and designed modular storage systems and accessories for various requirements of naval officials and sailors, creating a suitable place to live in a warship. All these designs followed a specific norm and standard.
Through my research process, I studied the processes and durations of refits done for warships, the hierarchy of naval accommodation, the space ergonomic requirements, the color, material, texture and patterns, user psychology, usage patterns, habits; design considerations such as norms/standards, statutory requirements and design constraints (safety norms for navy, service and maintenance).
The design methodology involved designing for naval modular storage units include customizing each and every unit as per the standard system specification incorporating latest technology. I designed tall lockers, kit lockers with multiple uses in different areas of the ship for storage for shoes/shirts and uniforms/ storage for shoes or an entertainment unit in the waiting area, storage units with shelving, door units with trays, towel hanger rods, handles, name tag holders.
My project allowed me to mature as a professional designer and gave me much needed practical experience of designing within constraints and. I had the benefit of linking discrete knowledge from different classes into an interlinked design process. Though our country has developed in various fields, western influence is so predominant. I feel that methods practiced in India should be the result of examination and implementation of its established traditions. |
