My brief consisted of two projects for the Residenza Project, an upcoming luxury property in Bangalore. The approach was to be ‘royal, stylish and elegant’
My first project was to design wall and floor tiles for the kitchen space. I was delighted to have the opportunity to design a new experience for the lady of the manor. I first studied the space around the site, understanding interiors and exteriors, studying the kitchen as a space, and analyzing colors, materials, textures and processes involved in the ceramic manufacturing industry. I conducted studies of competitor brands and prevalent colors in Bangalore and Chennai markets. User surveys followed to understand the underlying visual language of the kitchen environment through displays of heritage, personal preferences, accessories and aesthetics in the kitchen. Users wanted space, warmth, structure, the feeling of being close to nature and freedom. I then provided design directions with three different concepts each tying into nature –the first through direct depiction, the second through interpretation and the third inspired by Van Gogh’s paintings.
My second project involved creating a set of lights for the entrance portal of the exterior space of the kitchen. I experimented with techniques of surface ornamentation on glass to create many unique, innovative interesting effects. Adding color to the glass surface added another dimension by giving more depth to the character of the glass.
This has been an exciting interdisciplinary experience in terms of collaborating with architects. Working through the manufacturing process and with 3D has instilled confidence in me to make designs for the global arena. |
