My project is my contribution towards bringing the Kerala handicraft sector on the center stage of today’s global scenario.
The initial seed in my mind focused on a faint idea of making a range of garments for the tourists of Kerala. The idea was to provide trendy clothing solutions for tourists who felt the need to identify with and integrate into the local culture. A second aspect of my design concept was ‘reversibility’ wherein a complete new look unfolds on reversing, which includes the change of color, texture and also the silhouette. The clothes are all light to avoid the cumbersome aspects of heavy draping.
I visited handloom societies to understand the weavers’ lifestyles, dreams and challenges. My ambition then expanded to improving the condition of weavers . I also wanted to portray the craft from a modern perspective. In today’s world, when set trends and mass production influence people to lose their identity, this craft gives it back.
The final design deliverable includes 15 collections that are all reversible and are intended to help tourists build a rapport with local people and connect to the heritage of Kerala. I proposed solutions related to creating knowledge, training and the improvement of the financial condition of weavers. In addition, I designed road-maps for exports and strengthening the cultural identity of Kerala in the tourism sector.
As a designer, I have put sincere efforts to bring in freshness and also the idea of “local products going global” through my collections. |
