The project proposed to me was to conceptualise, develop and fabricate two collections, one for Spring and the other for Autumn, which had to cater to the European market. Since the company had a strong background in weaving, they clearly specified that the collection be prepared using the techniques of printing and embroidery.
The project started with a quick trip to Paris, France, to observe the prevailing design, material and colour trends in Europe. On my return, I drew references from the buyer’s websites, catalogues, trend guides, and their email briefs. Interaction with the various departments enabled me to understand the production and its dos and don’ts that enabled me to effectively incorporate the company’s available resources, avoid the limitations and come up with production friendly designs.
Quick analyses were done to understand global socio-economic happenings that influenced the buyer’s mood. Out of these, two themes were adapted, one based on natural living, catering to the Scandinavian market inspired from Indian spice ‘Curry Tree,’ and the other from a life of opulence based on the historical French lace from the era of King Louis XIV. Both these collections were fabricated with the concept of being classical and safe in terms of design, colour and form, to ensure maximum market appeal. The collection was displayed at the Heimtextil Fair 2007 in Frankfurt, Germany and received enormous buyer appreciation.
Having completed the project in the area of home textiles for the export market, I can better appreciate the experience and exposure I gained, and how it allows me to connect with my end user more sensitively. This project gave me an opportunity to travel and learn about a culture so different from my own, which has not only enriched my professional knowledge but also enhanced my personal approach to life.
