During my diploma project, I worked on various interesting projects aimed at developing products ranging from home furnishing to lifestyle and fashion accessories. This gave me a better understanding of the different phases of product development.
The objective of the project was to develop new designs for their existing product range as well as to introduce and develop innovative techniques to diversify the product range. The project involved viewing real life situations, more obviously in areas of design and innovation, production, market, and to strike a balance between them. It followed an exploratory approach, in terms of the material, the techniques and the application.
The initial phase involved the study of the company, its ideology, the infrastructure, the working system, clients, existing designs and products. My brief was to develop products by utilizing textile waste from the factory. After looking at the various possibilities on how to reuse the fabric waste, I did the exploration, made swatches out of these and later developed them into products keeping in mind stringent quality measures.
The challenge I faced was to make high end products from the waste, which was nerve breaking, but interesting at the same time, as it gave me an opportunity to use my design sensibilities to the fullest.
It allowed me to study and understand an established style of work and assimilate the findings into my own design sensibilities. It has enabled me to understand the constraints involved: time frames, financial feasibility, administration issues, etc. It opened up an entirely new world of resources, which meant a vast scope of experimentation. It helped me understand the strength and tenacity required to run an organization and coordinate work at various levels.
