Emotional design
My brief was to style a ‘6MV medical linac’ developed by SAMEER (Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering and Research) that is used to treat cancer patients.
With increasing products in the market, SAMEER had developed a 6MV medical linac, a cancer therapy machine, in order to reduce the cost of cancer treatment by cutting down the cost of the machine by at least 20% to 30% as compared to those of the competitors. Knowing that the product has to stand in line with the competition not only on the basis of performance or cost, but also with respect to styling and brand, which forms the first impression of the product, it became my task to design this unit in order to make it aesthetically and ergonomically strong.
The size of this machine was the biggest challenge for styling. Also, emotions of patients had to be considered. Pain and suffering due to the disease, yet hope and faith on the technology were the contrasting emotions that gave thread to the styling of the unit.
Apart from patients, people using it daily will be physicians, doctors and technicians. The product had to be a comfortable experience for them too. Thus, I had to develop a concept based on user study, product study, user comfort, interface issues, product problems and manufacturing issues. The design also had to be one that could distinguish itself from other brands in the market. After doing exhaustive styling explorations, the most promising design was taken forward for detailing.
This project has entailed great learning for me. It has introduced me to a new domain of industrial design. I see a lot of opportunity for designing in the area of medicine for myself as well as for the coming generation of designers.
