Sound emphasized television set
Indian market
My project was to design a near future sound emphasized television for the Indian market. Extensive user and market surveys were carried out during this project in western India for two purposes: Firstly, to understand the generic trend among television buyers, and families in the cities of India. The basic user survey was kept quite simple. It focused on the generic aspects of the television set and its users. The main idea behind this user survey was to get an in-depth understanding of what users like or do not like about their television sets. Secondly, to get an overall understanding of the user’s need, the current trend of the television market and to get a grip on the user-profile, dealers (an important connect between the consumer and the appliance brand) were interviewed.
Affluent information collection about the user, market, technology in Indian as well as global context, and consideration of the current scenario of LG in Indian television led to an ideation process of the near future sound emphasized ultra slim CRT television for the Indian market with some global appeal as well.
That’s how we decided to work on “Interactive entertainment” through “sound” and “vision” interaction between the TV and the user. This was to be achieved by the karaoke feature in TV, so that people could use the TV set’s sound and picture for enhancing their singing hobby and talent in a creative way, and a built-in camera to make TV a more realistic kind of display and entertainment.
This has been an enormously rewarding experience for me, which I enjoyed thoroughly. I learnt to design within project constraints with value addition in terms of user need and requirement in television entertainment in India. The documentation of the project led to reflective and organised learning.
