Translating brand identity
Due to its phenomenal growth in recent times, TATA thought the time was right for its jewellery brand, Tanishq, to go global with the launch of its exclusive stores in USA. This gave me a good reason to take up the task of designing four Tanishq collections — “Signature,” “Ginkgo,” “Logo,” and “Rain.”
Women have always been fascinated by jewellery. Exquisite jewellery challenges the jewellery industry to constantly upgrade itself to meet the needs and aspirations of every woman. I always had an inclination towards jewellery, but never got a chance to work with it, so this was a good opportunity to explore the field.
During the diploma project, I learnt a great deal about jewellery and design in all aspects including international trends, manufacturing processes and detailing. The diploma project helped me grow as an individual designer, creating designs which were an amalgamation of high-end technology and aesthetics. It gave me a platform to apply my learning from NID and life to get a good outcome without losing the integrity of my initial concepts. While working on the Signature Collection, I also learnt that a designer should never undermine a concept by thinking it is too simple, as simple ideas can do wonders.
The design process gave me a wholesome approach to my project from research, ideation, form explorations, to the final product. The project taught me how to work towards the vision of the design team to get a good outcome retaining the integrity of initial concepts. At an individual level, this project taught me the need to be organized and set deadlines to meet those of the company’s. I realize that, today, a designer should understand that jewellery is not only a means of personal adornment, but also an expression of a certain lifestyle.
