Jaipur Old City Revitalization Plan
Developing a way finding strategy and a corresponding signage design for the old city area of Jaipur, from Badi Chaupad till Jalmahal, Amer Road, was a part of the forty projects coming under ‘The Jaipur Old City Revitalization Plan’ undertaken by the Project Development Company of Rajasthan (PDCOR).
The main objective of the project was to come up with a unique signage design that would generate a sense of pride among the local people by incorporating the city’s heritage and culture. It also aimed at enabling people to relate to it from both information and experience perspectives, while navigating through the old city.
With only a span of six months in hand, Amer road, the North-South road, was unanimously selected as my area of study as it is dotted with all major tourist attractions of Jaipur. My client enlightened me about how the old city has been planned according to geometry and astronomy. Besides the topological study of the place, the methodology of reading plans and elevations, understanding architectural styles and changes in them over years formed a major part of the study, opening up doors to a detailed research of the space.
Working on an exterior space, understanding the three-dimensional aspects of space in relation to architecture, urban design and planning helped in understanding the needs of way-finding and in what format it should be proposed. This project would serve as a source of reference to graphic designers to understand in depth the application of 2D in combination with 3D.
The study document can be used by young graphic designers in future to understand the approach and stages of design development involved in a vast exterior space design project.
